TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan addressed reports that TikTok Shop would reopen on November 10, 2023. On X (previously Twitter), internet users have been talking about the rumor.
Zulkifli said that his ministry welcomes TikTok Shop to resume operations in Indonesia, provided they complete the licensing process required by the government.
"If they want to get a permit, go ahead. We are not prohibiting them from it," Zulhas said after visiting Tanah Abang Market on Friday, October 13.
Zulhas explained that the permit in question was an e-commerce permit. The reason is because this whole time TikTok only has a permits as a social commerce. However, it does not have an e-commerce license from the Ministry of Trade.
"We are open to it. But we have regulated it. So if [TikTok] wants to apply for an e-commerce permit, there will be regulations, whether it is for food, beverages, medicine goods, powder, and so forth, those would also need to be licensed by the BPOM," he said.
TikTok Shop, one of the features available on TikTok, officially ceased operating in Indonesia on October 4.
The closure came following the government's policy to ban social media from functioning as an e-commerce that provide sales and purchase services. These rules are stated in Trade Minister's Regulation No.31/2023.
Meanwhile, TikTok has not provided a statement to clarify on the issue that TikTok Shop would be available again in Indonesia.
