TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati explained Indonesia's commitment to become a full member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The information was revealed during the “Update on Indonesia’s Request to Start the OECD Accession Process” session in the OECD Council meeting held in OECD Headquarters in Paris yesterday, October 10, 2023.
"The structural reform in Indonesia for more than 20 years and the strengthening of cooperation between Indonesia and OECD becomes the important modality for Indonesia's faith and readiness to start the accession process to become an OECD member," Sri Mulyani said in the press release received by Tempo today, Oct. 11.
Sri Mulyani realized that the accession process would take a significant amount of time to ensure that Indonesia is up to standard. To support the process, the Indonesian government will form a National Committee involving several ministries and relevant agencies.
"The committee will be focused on identifying the policies and regulations needed to meet OECD's standard, monitoring the process, building cooperation with relevant stakeholders, developing internal and external strategic communication, and other necessary steps," she said.
During the meeting, she said, OECD members welcomed Indonesia's intention to become its member. "Indonesia will become the third Asian country after Japan and South Korea, and the first ASEAN country to become OECD's member," she said.
Indonesia's membership in the economic organization will also prove beneficial to the OECD. A number of its members also offered to share experience and transfer knowledge that will helpfully assist Indonesia in the accession process.
According to Sri Mulyani, Indonesia's membership in the organization will encourage better economic and national management reform to support sustainable economic growth. "This will create even more job opportunities and improve Indonesian's quality of life. Additionally, along with economic growth, there is a potential for higher income for the population. The improved economic condition will create better wages and improve the welfare for [Indonesian] families and individuals," Sri Mulyani concluded.
