TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rifda Irfanaluthfi made history by being the first Indonesian gymnast to secure a ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The official website of the Olympics reported on Oct. 3 that the host country reallocation saw Rifda obtain a spot after performing at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.
The 23-year-old athlete achieved her big dream of qualifying for the Olympics. In addition to Rifda, 14 other world-class gymnasts secured individual quota spots. They are Kaylia Nemour (Algeria), Pauline Schäfer (Germany), Alexa Moreno (Mexico), Filipa Martins (Portugal), Aleah Finnegan (Philippines), Lili Czifra (Hungary), Alba Petisco (Spain), Anna Lashchevksa (Ukraine), Lena Bickel (Switzerland), Hillary Heron (Panama), Caitlin Rooskrantz (South Africa), Sona Artamonova (Czech Republic), Lihie Raz (Israel) and Lucija Hribar (Slovenia).
The athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their National Olympic Committees (NOC) selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024 as the NOC has the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games.
Ita Yuliati, chair of the Indonesian Gymnastics Association (Persani), expressed her gratitude for the athlete's success in qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. “Thank God, our, Persani's, and Rifda's dreams have been fulfilled. Indonesian gymnastics can make history by performing at the Olympics,” she said.
Ita also thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports, NOC Indonesia, KONI, and other parties who helped Indonesian gymnasts to make it to the Olympics. She hoped that Persani could get training facilities for their athletes to develop their optimal potential.
The Indonesian National Olympic Committee (NOC Indonesia) also appreciated Rifda. “This is happy news amidst the struggles of other Indonesian athletes who are currently at the Hangzhou Asian Games,” NOC Indonesia chairman Raja Sapta Oktohari said.
In the women's all-around, Rifda Irfanaluthfi finished 52nd with a score of 49.932. She is 8.933 points behind American gymnast Simone Biles, who won the gold medal.
