TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Pertamina inked an agreement with Guma Africa Group Limited on Thursday, September 28, 2023, for a strategic alliance on the business potential of the upstream-to-downstream oil and gas industry in Africa.
"Hopefully, we could apply the competence and experience Pertamina possesses in Indonesia for Africa," said President Director of Pertamina Nicke Widyawati in her statement on Friday, September 29, 2023.
The agreement, Nicke said, will bolster the collaboration between Indonesia and Africa to maximize the opportunities for economic growth and energy resilience in both countries.
"Because we have a 'bring the barrels home' spirit, meaning, Pertamina's expansion has to bring great benefits for Indonesia," she said.
Executive Chairman Guma Africa Group Limited Robert Gumede stated that the agreement is a great momentum. According to him, Pertamina will support Africa's exploration, processing, and import of natural resources while applying the effectiveness and efficiency principles.
"We will implement in African countries with rich oil and gas and new renewable energy all the things Pertamina taught us," he said. "We are glad for this cooperation since it's mutually beneficial."
During Pertamina's prior visit to Africa, simultaneous with the visit from President Jokowi, the company initiated the development of the upstream-to-downstream oil and gas industry with several African business partners. The cooperation included new renewable energy such as geothermal.
"The total investment potential at the time was estimated to reach US$2.6 billion," she said. The cooperation will be conducted in Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa, with the intention of going global and increasing the production and contribution from Pertamina in the energy transition effort.
