TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi chaired a limited meeting at the Jakarta Merdeka Palace today, September 25, on digital issues including social commerce and the national strategic project Rempang Eco-City in Batam.
Several ministers were seen entering the Palace from 10:30 a.m., including Minister of Communications and Information Minister Budi Arie Setiadi, Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan, Cooperatives and SMEs Minister Teten Masduki, Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar, and Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
“The meeting is about digital, all issues (not just TikTok Shop), about e-commerce,” Zulkifli Hasan said upon arriving at the palace.
Meanwhile, Budi Arie said he could yet to provide any information until the meeting was over. However, he claimed that the meeting would indeed discuss TikTok Shop, which has been in the public spotlight recently.
Cooperatives and SMEs Minister Teten Masduki refused to say a word when he landed at the Palace. As previously reported, he has been pushing for the government to regulate social commerce by revising the Trade Minister’s Regulation No. 50/2020 on business licensing, advertising, guidance, and supervision of business actors in trading via electronic systems.
Apart from social commerce, President Jokowi and the ministers would reportedly discuss the national strategic project (PSN) Rempang Eco-City in Batam which has faced objections from local residents and public criticism.
“We will issue a press statement after the meeting,” Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said after arriving at the Palace.
