Jokowi Sees Off Indonesian Contingents for Asian Games 2023

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi bid farewell to the 576 Indonesian contingents for the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. He expected Indonesia to finish in the top ten in Asia's biggest multi-sport event.

Indonesia sent 413 athletes and 161 officials to compete in 30 sports at the 19th Asian Games. The team departed for China in stages starting in early September. “Usually, my calculations are not wrong,” he said of the target.

Jokowi also encouraged the fighting spirit of the athletes. He reminded the delegates that Indonesia could achieve the top four rankings when hosting the 2018 Asian Games.

The 2023 Asian Games will take place in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8, 2023. However, a number of sports, such as football, will commence earlier on Tuesday, September 19, 2023.

Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo predicted in his written statement that Indonesia can finish in the top 12 with 8-12 gold medals. One of the leading sports for the Indonesian contingent is athletics.
