Jakarta to Revitalize Rivers, Reservoirs to Anticipate Flooding

14 September 2023 06:47 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Acting Governor Heru Budi Hartono said the city administration will soon revitalize 16 rivers, lakes, dams, and reservoirs to anticipate flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

“We are doing flood mitigation based on the regulation drafted in the Regional Development Plan 2023-2026,” Heru said in a plenary session at the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) building on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

Ahead of the rainy season, the provincial government is determined to develop flood monitoring systems and launch maintenance programs for flood control infrastructure and facilities.

Heru said the regional government would intensively cooperate with the central government and synchronize a series of priority land acquisition programs to expedite construction projects performed by the Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Ministry.

In 2023, Jakarta will also increase river capacity for flood control by focusing on 4.3 kilometers of the Ciliwung River, and build priority river infrastructure, such as the Baru Timur River, Sunter River, and Pesanggrahan River.

To mitigate the risk of flooding due to tidal waves or sea tides, Jakarta will build coastal safety dams in the West Ancol, Muara Angke, and Blencong River areas and increase the capacity of water storage and river drainage.

Heru Budi stated that he is committed to continuing the synergy with Jakarta’s surrounding regions to overcome the flooding.

Heru Budi disclosed these flood mitigation efforts in response to the diverse views of the Jakarta DPRD factions regarding the draft of the revised 2023 Jakarta Regional Budget (APBD-P).
