BMKG Warns of Heavy Downpour, Tidal Flooding in Parts of Indonesia

1 September 2023 08:10 WIB

Tidal flooding at Kali Adem Port, Muara Angke, Jakarta, Wednesday, January 5, 2022. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), there is a new moon phase that coincides with the Perigee period (the closest distance from the moon to the earth) This causes a significant increase in the height of the sea tide reaching its maximum. TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) released a weather forecast for Friday, September 1, 2023, in which parts of the country will be hit by rain and coastal flooding.

“Rain accompanied by lightning is forecast in Tarakan on Friday. Light rain is likely to wet Banda Aceh, Ternate, Manokwari, Mamuju, and Medan,” the agency announced.

Meanwhile, Banjarmasin is expected to be shrouded in smoke, and Jambi may be covered in fog.

The air temperature will be in the range of 20-35°C with the lowest temperature in Bandung and the highest temperature in Banjarmasin and Palangkaraya.

The agency also stressed that Aceh, North Sumatra, North Kalimantan, North Maluku, and Papua are under the alert status of heavy rain. Besides, NTB, NTT, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi had the potential for strong winds.

The agency also issued an early warning of high waves in several Indonesian waters on September 1-2, 2023. In northern areas, the wind generally moves from southeast to southwest at speeds of 5-25 knots. In southern areas, it generally moves from east to southeast at speeds between 8-25 knots.

“The highest wind speed was observed in the southern part of the Makassar Strait, South Sulawesi waters, the Seram Sea, and the Maluku Sea,” the BMKG reported, adding that this could increase waves to 2.5-4 meters in the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra, waters south of Banten, and the Indian Ocean south of Banten.
