TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia ensured that the government will proceed with Rempang Eco-City development despite the rejection from the locals. Conflict heated up on the island as residents were urged to relocate from the area.

"Of course [Rempang Eco-City national strategic program] has to proceed. We'll see, there will be dissemination later," he said when met after a meeting with Comission VI of DPR on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. He is also optimistic that the conflict will not deter investors.

Rempang Eco-City will be built over two districts in Rempang Island, Sembulang District, and Rempang Cate. The development was set as a national strategic program in late August.

However, the situation in the area has been heating up gradually. After a clash between the residents of Rempang Island and the officers on Thursday evening, September 7, thousands of people staged a protest on Monday, September 11, 2023, which ended in chaos.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno hoped that the conflict in Rempang Island could be handled better. "Investment requires a conducive situation. Without it, a smooth-sailing investment is unlikely," said the minister when met at the ministry office on Monday.

Sandiaga said that the tourism area in Rempang Eco-City will take on a green tourism concept. "But as we reminded at the coordination meeting, don't let the striking idea to develop a green industrial area with new renewable energy cause the aspects of residents in the area to be ignored," he said.

He went on to say that the government has to intensify dissemination to the residents to guarantee legal and economic certainty. "That's what I underlined during the coordination meeting on the preparation of the industrial area in Rempang," he concluded.
