TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan mentioned that the ASEAN Strategy for Carbon Neutrality creates a potential for a green economy in ASEAN. According to Zulkifli, the agreement could be an entry point for green investment in ASEAN countries.
"A strong mutual commitment is necessary to encourage a just and equal green investment growth in the region, in order to realize a sustainable inclusive development," he said during the 23rd ASEAN Economic Community Council meeting in Jakarta on Sunday, September 3, 2023.
ASEAN Strategy on Carbon Neutrality is intended to leverage the synergy between ASEAN members, with a commitment to develop green industries, enhance ASEAN interoperability, embed globally credible standards, and unlock green capabilities.
The minister revealed that ASEAN's economic potential is estimated to develop from 5.6% in 2022 to 4.7% in 2023 and 5,0% in 2024. The growth is supported by the rise of domestic household consumption and the developing trade as well as recovery in the service sector, such as tourism.
However, the global economy proves to be a challenge, with several risks such as the geopolitical crisis, trade policies with an inclination of protectionism, never-ending inflation, and climate change.
"I agree with the Chair that [ASEAN] has to be aware of deglobalization and the demographic shifts in the region," he said.
Zulkifli believed ASEAN has the necessary capital to boost the region's trade architecture. These, he said, include the ongoing ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), the full implementation of RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership), dan the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA).
