Jokowi Leads 12 Conferences, 13 Bilateral Meetings during ASEAN Summit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi is scheduled to hold 13 bilateral meetings and lead 12 conferences in the series of ASEAN Summit events in Jakarta on September 5-7.
"There are 13 scheduled bilateral meetings, so far, and the number may continue to increase," said Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi on Friday, September 1, when accompanying the president monitoring the ASEAN Summit venue at the Jakarta Convention Center in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
In addition, the Indonesian president is scheduled to lead 12 conferences, namely the plenary session, informal meeting, ASEAN-China Summit, ASEAN-South Korea Summit, and ASEAN-Japan Summit. As well as the ASEAN-US Summit, ASEAN-Canada Summit, ASEAN-India Summit, ASEAN-Australia Summit, ASEAN-UN Summit, ASEAN+3 (China, Japan, South Korea) Summit, and East Asia Summit.
“So, in total, the President has to lead 25 meetings and 12 of them are conferences,” said Retno.
Retno explained that the 43rd ASEAN Summit would be attended by 22 countries: 11 ASEAN country members including East Timor or Timor Leste and nine partner countries.
At the peak of the event, Indonesia also invited Bangladesh as the chair of the Association of Indian Ocean Rim Countries (IORA) and Cook Island as the chair of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).
Indonesia invited IORA and PIF as one of its priorities as ASEAN Chair to realize an Indo-Pacific region that is peaceful, stable, prosperous, and embraces all parties, Retno explained.
The summit held under the big theme of “ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth” is also attended by international organizations that partner with ASEAN, namely PBB, World Bank, IMF, and World Economic Forum (WEF).
