Jokowi Opens ASEAN Summit, Calling for Unity to Be Motor of Growth

TEMPO.CO, Labuan Bajo - Indonesian President Joko Jokowi Widodo opened the 42nd ASEAN Summit at the Meruorah Labuan Bajo Hotel, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. The opening ceremony was attended by leaders of members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including delegations from Timor Leste and Myanmar.

In his opening remarks, Jokowi stated that ASEAN unity must continue to be strengthened in order to be able to be a motor of peace and economic growth.

“The global economy has not yet fully recovered, ASEAN must be the engine of peace and economic growth. The key is unity so will be able to become a central player in bringing world peace and growth,” he emphasized.

"We have strong assets as the epicenter of growth. Our economy is growing far above the world average, with a demographic bonus, and regional stability. ASEAN must further enhance economic integration, tighten inclusive cooperation, and strengthen the architecture of health, food, and energy, as well as financial stability,” he elaborated.

Jokowi invited all ASEAN countries to bolster relations and work hard to make ASEAN the epicenter of growth. “So that ASEAN can be seen as a center of economic growth by representing progress in all fields,” Jokowi remarked.
