TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is considering subsidizing Pertamax fuel in an effort to reduce air pollution caused by the use of low-octane fuel.
This was confirmed by the ESDM Ministry’s Secretary General Dadan Kusdiana in an official statement. He explained that his side is discussing the fuel subsidy plan.
“We're exploring the subsidy’s technical implementation, the regulations, and the economic impact, which will certainly change. So, the ESDM Minister (Arifin Tasrif) will disclose it soon, but we're still discussing it internally,” Dadan said on Thursday, August 24, 2023.
He explained that the ministry would study the air pollution in Jakarta and its surroundings in terms of fuel circulation. According to him, the use of a high-octane fuel can reduce combustion emissions from vehicles.
“Technically, the higher the octane number [of a fuel used in a vehicle], the better the combustion. With better combustion, there will be less production of emissions,” Dadan said.
At present, the government only subsidizes two types of fuel, namely Pertalite and Biosolar. The high use of the two low-octane fuels has been blamed for worsening air pollution in the capital.
