Jakarta Metro Police Logs 2-3% Hike in Vehicle Numbers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Traffic Director of Jakarta Metro Police Adj. Sr. Comr. Doni Hermawan said the number of motorized vehicles in the capital city reached 23 million as recorded by the police’s Vehicle Document Registration Center (Samsat).
“There is an increase [in vehicle population] of about 2-3 percent every year,” Doni said at Jakarta Police HQ on Friday, August 25, 2023.
According to him, the increase in vehicle numbers in a country depends on its economy. When the economy improves, people's purchasing power increases.
More vehicles also affect the traffic density on the roads. Apart from causing congestion, it also contributes to air pollution from vehicle exhaust emissions.
In an effort to curb air pollution coming from vehicle gas, the provincial government is intensifying emissions testing for each vehicle. Jakarta Metro Police would also issue tickets to vehicles that fail the test starting August 26 as stipulated in Article 285 paragraph (1) and 286 paragraph (1) of Law No. 22 of 2009 on traffic and land transportation.
Doni further appealed to the public to take care of their motorized vehicles and have them tested for emissions immediately. “Take regular service for motorized vehicles to ensure their roadworthiness,” he underlined.
Today, August 25, the police started to disseminate emissions tests at six points. Vehicles that fail the test will be ticketed with a maximum fine of Rp250,000. “We are cooperating with related agencies, including the Environment Agency which has the testing equipment,” Doni said.
