TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police’s Directorate of Traffic is determined to ticket vehicle owners who fail the emissions tests as part of the efforts to curb air pollution in the capital. Police traffic director Sr. Comr. Latif Usman said his side would participate in improving the air quality in Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek.
“One of them is [by monitoring] transportation modes that comply with regulations, especially regarding exhaust emissions,” Latif said at the Jakarta City Hall, on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.
He explained that there are a number of stages to take action against vehicles that violate emissions tests. “We will certainly conduct these stages, from disseminating [the policy], issuing a warning, to issuing a ticket,” he outlined.
The traffic police would only assist the Jakarta Environment Agency in this vehicle emissions check. “Because they have the tools, so we will help with the ticketing,” Latif added.
As for the locations of the emissions checks, Latif claimed that his side was still studying the matter, stressing that unlike in other regions, the police in Jakarta could not stop vehicles anywhere at random.
“If we stop [vehicles] on any road, the traffic will be heavily congested. We are surely looking for places or areas to perform the inspection,” he confirmed.
The ticketing will take effect starting August 26, 2023. The enforcement of traffic violations is based on Articles 285 and 286 of Law No. 22 of 2009 concerning traffic and transportation.
Latif went on to say that the fines for vehicle drivers violating the emission limit are Rp250,000 for two-wheeled vehicles and Rp500,000 for four-wheeled vehicles. “This is the maximum fine,” he said.
