TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mego Pinandito, Deputy for Development Policy at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), said that a nuclear power plant (PLTN) produces extremely low air pollution or gas emissions during its operation. The statement was made in response to the proposed construction of a nuclear power plant in an effort to improve Jakarta's air quality.
Mego stressed, however, that many things must be taken into consideration before the construction of a nuclear power plant. [Such as,] where the PLTN will be located,” he said during the meeting on "the Harmonization of National Programs for Development and Application of Advanced NDT Techniques", on Monday, August 21, 2023, at the B.J. Habibie building, Jakarta.
Regarding air pollution in the capital, he suggested that the government should first seek the causes. For example, the characteristics of the city and its urban climatology. The shifting nature or characteristics generated by climate change and global warming must also be considered.
Regarding motorized vehicles behind the worsening pollution, he believed that they were not the problem unless causing traffic jams. He supported the government’s program of promoting mass transit or electric vehicles, as well as greening, to help reduce pollution.
“If they are implemented one by one, it can reduce the negative effects of pollution,” Mego said.
He went on to say that rain could also help reduce air pollution levels. “Hopefully, the rain will fall so that there will be a cleansing of the atmosphere.” Yet, he acknowledged that extreme rainfall could trigger flooding.
