TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Health Agency urges parents to administer immunization to their children amid the deteriorating air quality in the city.

"Immunization is one of the integral measures to prevent the effect of air pollution for at-risk groups such as infants and children," said the Health Agency Head of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Immunization Department Ngabila Salama on Monday, August 14, 2023, as quoted by Antara.

In addition, immunization is one of the measures to prevent Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) and pneumonia in children due to unhealthy air quality.

Ngabila said that immunization is also necessary for other at-risk groups such as pregnant women, pre-elderly (45-59 years of age), and elderly people (above 60 years old).

"Since immunization for children, especially infants, is not yet optimal, we urge children to avoid outdoor activities or wear masks when outdoor," Ngabila explained.

The same sentiment was shared with Dwi Oktavia, Head of Disease Prevention and Countermeasure Department of the same agency, who emphasized the importance of children's immunization. "Children and infant immunization is necessary to maintain their immune system to adapt to environmental changes and faces threats of micro-organism," said Dwi.

Dwi also urged the public to maintain their health. "The Health Agency has prepared health facilities with capable health professionals and examination tools to diagnose people and screen their health," Dwi explained.

Previously, the agency mentioned that around 100,000 Jakartans suffered from ARI every month due to weather transitions. The details are 102,609 cases in January; 104,638 cases in February; 119,734 cases in March; 99,130 cases in May; and 102,475 cases in June.
