TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairman Erick Thohir said he had received a letter from FIFA regarding the renovation of Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) on July 20, 2023. He disclosed that FIFA wrote a number of notes for the stadium revamp project.
“We need to follow up on several notes immediately before FIFA conducts checking which is planned from 28th (of July) to August 2,” Erick said during a press conference on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
The central and regional governments agreed to renovate JIS before it is proposed to serve the 2023 U-17 World Cup. It is claimed that some of the stadium supporting infrastructure and facilities did not meet FIFA standards such as grass fields and access gates.
As written in the letter, Erick claimed that FIFA asks for the current grass to be repaired to avoid risks.
FIFA will later deploy consultants to check the feasibility of JIS. “Don’t engage in polemic. The consultants have the appointment letter from FIFA, not from us,” said Erick who also serves as SOE Minister.
Erick Thohir also said PSSI had sent a letter on July 24 to the Minister of Youth and Sports related to the renovation of the stadium, which has a capacity of 82,000 people.
As quoted from PSSI’s official website, changing the grass of JIS is the priority request voiced by FIFA. In addition, the world football governing body planned to roll out field management training for local management and field officers.
