TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi on Saturday, July 15, held a bilateral meeting with her Turkey's counterpart Hakan Fidan in Jakarta. The meeting discussed various issues including Islamophobia and the reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

In the meeting, Indonesia, and Turkey also conveyed the shared interests of both countries: the Palestine issue.

“We have the same prinsip-prinsip. We want the freedom of Palestine. We also want peace in Afghanistan and the honor of the rights of the Afghanistan women,” said Retno in a press conference held virtually.

Minister Fidan said that the meeting also discussed various global challenges that are getting more complicated, including Islamophobia and the act of Quran burning repeatedly happening in Sweden.

The act sparked condemnation from many countries and international organizations, such as Turkey, Indonesia, the European Union, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

“We also discussed various issues; from the Rohingya to the reform of UNSC,” Fidan said.

UN Security Council reform has become a concern of the Indonesian government in recent years.

Indonesia is also one of the countries that have stated the importance of Asian and African countries to continue pushing for the process of UNSC reform in an effort to make the Security Council more democratic and representative.

Russia, which is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council along with the US, China, France, and the UK, had also touched on this issue.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last month that Moscow would seek to expand UN Security Council membership to give Asian, African, and Latin American countries more representation and break what he called Western domination.
