Lion Air Makassar-Surabaya Flight Returns to Base 37 Minutes After Takeoff

13 July 2023 20:42 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaLow-cost carrier Lion Air's JT-803 flight serving the Makassar-Surabaya route returned to base, Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, after 37 minutes of flying at an altitude of 28,000 feet.

“This decision was taken by the pilot based on indicators in the cockpit that there was likely interference at one particular component,” the airline’s spokesperson Danang Mandala Prihantoro said in a written statement on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

The flight departed from Makassar’s Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport on Wednesday, July 12, at 19:53 Central Indonesian Time (WITA) and headed to Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport using a Boeing 737-800NG aircraft registered PK-LJQ. 110 passengers and 7 crew members were on board.

Danang said the pilot made a thorough evaluation while considering passenger safety and convenience before jumping to the decision. “The pilot wisely decided to return to the airport of origin with the aim of carrying out further checks on the ground,” he added.

“Lion Air appreciates the decision taken by the pilot in ensuring the safety and convenience of passengers. This decision is in line with the strict standard operating procedures."

According to him, the plane landed safely at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. All passengers were directed to the waiting room. Lion Air thus prepared a substitute aircraft, Boeing 737-900ER registered PK-LSF.

“The JT-803 flight then continued its journey at 21:43 WITA and landed safely at Juanda International Airport at 21:50 WIB (Western Indonesian Time),” Danang confirmed.

Lion Air offered sincere apologies to all affected passengers for the inconvenience.
