TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The annual Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival is a fashion festival located in the far east city of Java island. This year's event was held on July, 5 to July 9, 2023 in the East Java regency of Banyuwangi.
"Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival is one of the means of creation for the youth, especially those who are passionate about fashion," said the Regent of Banyuwangi, Ipuk Fiestiandani.
She is hoping that this festival could encourage the youth to channel their creative ideas through unique costumes. "We are confident that this event will conceive potential designers in the region," said Ipuk.
To kick off the event, young and adult models paraded Ethno Wear costumes in Lorong Bambu, Blambangan's Cultural Arts Building. The models exhibited their contemporary costume creation to visualize this year's theme, "The Magic of Ijen Geopark", by incorporating Kawah Ijen, Parang Ireng Beach, Sukamade, and Alas Purwo into their costumes.
Ethno Wear Parade
Ethno Wear is a series of ethnic contemporary fashion parades that was inspired by the declaration of Ijen Geopark as part of international geopark networks by the UNESCO Global Geopark Executive Board in Paris, France on May 24, 2023.
The costumes worn by the models were their own creations or collaboration with local designers. Some wore peacock-like headpieces to represent the animals of Alas Purwo, some decorated their fit with tukik or turtle hatchlings of the Sukamade Beach, while others were inspired by the blue flame of Kawah Ijen.
The Secretary of the Culture and Tourism Department of Banyuwangi, Ahmad Choliqul Ridho, said that this event is held to accommodate the Blambangan youth's fashion community. "The community regularly held their own fashion show every week. We want to facilitate their creativity," he explained.
