TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Health Agency recorded at least 1,527 cases of rabies-transmitting animal bites (GHPR) across the capital in 2023. The agency’s head of surveillance and immunization, Ngabila Salama, said the data is obtained from two city hospitals.
“There are 1,527 GHPR cases in 2023 [based on data] from Tarakan Regional Hospital and Sulianti Saroso Hospital,” Ngabila said in Jakarta, Monday, June 26, as quoted from Antara.
Ngabila asserted that they were not the total number of rabies cases, but the number of people who got bitten by animals that could transmit the fatal viral disease. “As a form of prevention and anticipation, the hospital manages every treatment, including administering anti-rabies vaccine,” she added.
Most cases of such bites are from cats and dogs. There are also bites from monkeys, apes, or bats. Based on data from 194 hospitals and 44 sub-district health centers in Jakarta in 2023, there have been no cases of death due to animal bites.
During January-June 2023, the majority of GHPR victims, or 363, came from outside of Jakarta. There were 129 GHPR cases recorded in South Jakarta, 140 cases in Central Jakarta, 232 cases in West Jakarta, 330 cases in East Jakarta, and 333 in North Jakarta.
As a referral hospital for GHPR cases, Tarakan General Hospital treated 703 cases, while Sulianti Saroso Hospital handled 824 cases.
Since 2004, Jakarta has been declared a rabies-free area. as stipulated through the Decree of the Agriculture Minister No. 566/Kpts/PD.640/10/2004.
