TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian and United States Air Forces conducted the first joint exercise for B-52 bomber landing, as reported by the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta in a statement on Friday, June 23, 2023.
For the first time in history, two U.S. B-52 bombers landed in Indonesia on Monday, June 19, to carry out training with the F-16 aircraft of the Indonesian Air Force.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the landing at Kualanamu Airport in Medan and subsequent operations marked the first time the bombers had operated in the archipelago.
The B-25, from the 23rd Bomb Expeditionary Squadron (23EBS) at Minot Air Base in North Dakota, took part in a joint landing interoperability exercise of the two countries’ Air Force.
The operation, which was held in conjunction with Cope West 2023, involved 60 crew members. This is a bilateral exercise that is currently underway at the Roesmin Nurjadin Air Force Base, Pekanbaru on June 12-23, 2023.
During the joint exercise, air force personnel from the two countries will exercise tactical combat capabilities, evaluate proficiency, identify future training opportunities, and enhance capabilities that are integral to diverse bilateral missions.
This year, Indonesia and the U.S. carried out the 10th Cope West joint exercise in Indonesia. It is a routine joint exercise that was first held back in 1989.
The U.S. Embassy also outlined that the U.S. Air Force in tandem with other components, allies, and partners, provides continuous unrivaled air, space, and cyber capabilities for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command to uphold the rules-based international order and ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific.
