TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) agrees with the government's decision to revoke the COVID-19 pandemic status in the country. However, IDI’s chairperson of the COVID-19 Task Force Erlina Burhan underlines three notes.
“IDI agrees with revoking the pandemic status in Indonesia. The President also states that we are entering an endemic phase,” Erlina said in an online press conference held online on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
The first note is everyone must be aware that the virus still exists albeit under control. IDI asks people not to overlook possible virus transmission. “Don’t ignore the risk of transmission amid the euphoria of pandemic status change to endemic,” Erlina said.
IDI encourages people to keep applying a clean and healthy lifestyle as has been adopted for the past three years. This includes washing hands regularly, consuming healthy foods and drinks, and doing exercises.
“There are even people who stop smoking. So resume these healthy living habits,” Erlina added.
The third note is people are suggested to wear masks in certain situations or conditions, such as when having a cough, runny nose, fever, or symptoms related to COVID-19. Wearing masks is also recommended for the elderly, those with congenital or comorbid illnesses, and travelers.
The four pillars of prevention
In addition to the three notes, IDI proposes four pillars of prevention dubbed SIAP to the government as efforts to avert, control, and manage COVID-19 for the long term.
The pillars are continuing adequate and collaborative surveillance, providing health information, ensuring access to vaccines, personal protective equipment, medicines, and oxygen for health workers and groups at high risk of COVID-19 transmission, and ensuring the availability of COVID-19 tests, services, and care throughout Indonesia.
