TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An economist from the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef), Nailul Huda, assessed that customers of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) will not massively get their money out of the sharia bank despite service disruptions that lasted for days.
“Regarding mass withdrawals, I don’t think it will happen because BSI is a niche market. So, they will definitely be loyal [customers],” Nailul said to Tempo in a written statement, Sunday, May 14, 2023.
BSI, however, had to overcome this so that it would not recur in the future. The incident of service disruption for days, Nailul argued, had been a serious blow to the bank and the banking industry.
He thus believed that the implementation of the Personal Data Protection Law or PDP Law needs to be accelerated.
“If this case can be 'handled' properly through the instruments of the PDP Law, then it can become a benchmark for similar cases in the future,” he opined.
Moreover, the economist went on, the banking industry will be in close contact with the digital world where competition between banks will not only be physical but also technological.
“The existence of the Personal Data Protection Law must force companies to create a strong security system so that it does not harm the community. Prevention of data leakage starts with strong regulations for data protection itself,” Nailul emphasized.
The banking service of Indonesia's largest sharia bank, BSI, was disrupted for several days earlier this week. On Saturday, May 13, the bank president director Hery Gunardi said 434 branch offices across the country open this weekend on Saturday-Sunday, May 13-14.
