BMKG: Penumbral Lunar Eclipse to Occur at Midnight May 5-6

3 May 2023 10:58 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaAfter the total solar eclipse on April 20, the penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible in Indonesian territory at midnight, right between Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, 2023. Fortunately, the phenomenon can be enjoyed without the need for special glasses.

A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned. This causes the Moon to only enter the penumbral shadow, instead of the core shadow of the Earth. As a result, when the peak of the eclipse occurs, the Moon will appear dimmer than that during the full moon.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained that the penumbral lunar eclipse will commence on Friday, May 5, at 22:12:09 WIB (western Indonesian time). The peak will be on May 6 at 00:22:52 WIB and ended at 02:33:36. Central and eastern Indonesian regions can also observe this natural phenomenon with an added time of 1-2 hours. The duration of the eclipse will likely last 4 hours, 21 minutes, and 28 seconds.

BMKG also noted that the upcoming penumbral lunar eclipse can be observed in most of Asia and Australia, a small part of Africa, and parts of Russia in Europe.

Eclipse Cycle

The penumbral lunar eclipse on May 5 is the 24th member of the 73 members of the Saros cycle series 141. The previous lunar eclipse associated with this eclipse was the Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on April 24, 2005, while the next eclipse associated with this upcoming phenomenon is the partial lunar eclipse on May 16, 2041.

2023 Eclipse

There will be four eclipses occurring throughout 2023, namely two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses. The details are as follows:

  1. Total Solar Eclipse on April 20, which can be observed from Indonesia,
  2. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on May 5-6, which can be observed from Indonesia,
  3. Annular Solar Eclipse on October 14, which cannot be observed from Indonesia, and
  4. Partial Lunar Eclipse on October 29, which can be observed from Indonesia.
