Expert's Tips to Apply Sunscreen Optimally

3 May 2023 10:22 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaExposure to ultraviolet or UV rays can be harmful to the body's health, such as damaging the skin, causing eye problems, and triggering allergic reactions. Using sunscreen can shield the skin from harm caused by UV radiation.

As reported by the American Academy of Dermatology Association, here are tips to use sunscreen so that it works optimally:

1. Apply sunscreen before going outdoors

It takes about 15 minutes for the skin to absorb the sunscreen. Your skin may not be protected and get sunburned if you use sunscreen when you are out in the sun.

2. Use enough sunscreen

Most adults need about one ounce of sunscreen to fully protect the whole body. Apply sunscreen thoroughly to the skin including the neck, face, ears, and feet. Ask someone to help you apply sunscreen at hard-to-reach areas like your back or use a spray one. You may want to apply them too to the head if you have thin hair. Use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 to protect your lips.

3. Re-apply every two hours

To stay protected when outdoors, reapply sunscreen every two hours or when you sweat.

4. Get additional protection

Sunscreen cannot completely prevent sunburn and skin cancer. Quoting from mdanderson.org, get additional protection for the skin by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, wrap-around dark sunglasses with UV protection, and a tightly woven long-sleeved shirt or special protective clothing from sunlight.
