TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The man who fired shots at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in Menteng, Central Jakarta, Mustofa NR, apparently had sent a threatening letter to the Office last year. In the letter, Mustofa addressed his message to the Metro Police chief and claimed to have brought a knife to the police headquarters.

At that time, the Jakarta Metro Police chief was Inspector General Fadil Imran.

In the letter, Mustofa expressed his disappointment because he was not met with the Chairman of the MUI. He asked the police to imprison him for life or shoot him dead if he was not met with the chairman of the MUI.

He also swore he would find a firearm and shoot "the rulers/officials in this country, especially the MUI people, without prior notification/permission for the second time to law enforcement/police because I am tired of fighting for my rights, namely justice."

He signed the letter on July 22, 2022.

The staff at the MUI office gave the letter to the assembly' leaders which then gave it to its Assessment Commission. According to the MUI's deputy secretary general for law and human rights Ikhsan Abdullah, the letter was ignored because the perpetrator claimed to be God, which raised suspicion that he might have been "insane".

Ikhsan believes that Mustofa is the same person as the perpetrator of the attack on the Lampung MUI office before Ramadan, around two months ago.

Mustofa, 60, shot at Central MUI Headquarters during a gathering today at 11:30 a.m. It was reported that he had died and his body is currently at the Kramat Jati Police Hospital to undergo an autopsy.

The reason for his death has not been concluded yet, but so far there have been no reports of him being fired at return shots.

According to Komaruddin, Mostofa was unconscious when he was arrested. He was taken to the Menteng community health center and was proclaimed dead by the doctor on duty.
