TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police prepared 2,627 personnel and installed face recognition technology to secure the 42nd ASEAN Summit scheduled to take place from May 9 to May 11, 2023, in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
“We plan to mobilize 2,627 personnel. 947 personnel from the National Police Headquarters, 1,660 personnel from the NTT Regional Police, and 20 personnel from the NTB Regional Police,” Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police Inspector General Sandi Nugroho said in an official statement on Friday, April 28, 2023.
Sandi explained that thousands of personnel will be deployed in various places, starting from the airport, the accommodations for delegates or heads of state, and the venues.
Prior to the main agenda, Sandi said that there will be side events on May 7 to May 9. "The National Police provided personnel assistance in rings 1, 2, and 3. For side events, it is the full responsibility of the Police,” Sandi added.
The National Police will also improve existing facilities in Labuan Bajo, including static and mobile CCTV which will be equipped with face recognition technology to detect suspicious people.
Sandi mentioned that there had been a decrease in crime trends in NTT. However, there are still several concerns, namely the increase in the number of traffic accidents from 2021 to 2022. “As well as the potential for disasters in NTT, such as earthquakes and abrasion, the hydrometeorological disasters, and the high heat level,” Sandi said.
“The National Police are ready to maintain the security and convenience of delegates and heads of state in attending the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, NTT,” Sandi remarked.
