TEMPO.CO, North Lombok - The festivity of the Eid al-Fitr holiday period at the Setangi beach located in North Lombok on Tuesday turned into tragedy after three teenage tourists who traveled from Mataram were swept by strong currents.
Unfortunately, two were found lifeless later in the day with lifeguards managing to rescue the third individual who survived the ordeal.
Local police sector chief Lalu Eka Arya Mardiwinata said that he immediately mobilized teams from the search and rescue (SAR team) and local water police unit after receiving a report of the missing tourists. At the time, bad weather was believed to be one of the causes.
“The weather at the time of the incident was raining badly and there were high tides in the coastal areas,” Lalu Eka said on April 25.
The search for the victims, assisted closely by local residents, lasted for roughly an hour. Two were eventually discovered lifeless and were immediately taken to a local community health center and later transported to the home of one of the victims’ relatives.
The two who did not make it were Maiza (16) and Algi (14) while Kamil (16) survived. “Two of the victims were reportedly unable to swim,” he explained.
“The current extreme weather is highly dangerous for the livelihood of visitors,” the police chief strongly reminded the public.
