TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) invited the public to watch the solar eclipse on Thursday, April 20, in three cities, namely Jakarta, Biak, and Fakfak.
For Jakarta, the activity is carried out at the Ancol Dermaga Cinta, North Jakarta, starting at 08:30 western Indonesian time (WIB). “We plan to install three telescopes at Dermaga Cinta Ancol,” said Himawan Widiyanto, BMKG’s Time Sign Coordinator, who is also the PIC for eclipse and new moon observations, on Tuesday, April 18.
The two telescopes will be available for live streaming, and the rest one for a photo booth.
The agency will also provide souvenirs in the form of free eclipse glasses for lucky visitors. “30 free eclipse glasses for the first 30 visitors,” he explained.
According to him, one telescope in the photo booth will not be used for observation but for people interested in taking a photo. Himawan said that seeing a hybrid solar eclipse does not need a telescope.
“If anyone wants to see a hybrid solar eclipse at home, they can do so by visiting the gerhana.bmkg.go.id website,” he suggested.
Another observation location is at Nirmala Biak Beach Hotel at 11:00 eastern Indonesian time (WIT) and in Wambar Beach Fakfak at the same time.
Apart from the BMKG, Planetarium Jakarta will hold similar agenda at the Jakarta Theater Plaza of Taman Ismail Marzuki, Central Jakarta. Interested residents are expected to register online in advance at linktr.ee/planetariumjkt.
The committee will set up 13 telescopes equipped with solar filters which could be used to observe the eclipse phenomenon. Visitors can also watch the results of observations of the total solar eclipse broadcast live by the UP PKJ TIM Hybrid Solar Eclipse Expedition team from Biak, Papua.
Jakarta will get a partial solar eclipse with 38.956 percent closure. The initial eclipse occurred at 09:29:26.6 WIB with a maximum partial peak at 10:45:21.5 WIB and ended at 12:06:39.6 WIB. The total duration of the eclipse is 2 hours 37 minutes 13.1 seconds.
