TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Banten Police Chief Inspector General Rudy Heriyanto issued a shoot-on-sight order against ‘bajing loncat’, a common name for vehicle hijacker often operates during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming or mudik season.
Rudy emphasized that these common criminals have disturbed travelers. The crime does not only endanger the lives of the people but also the lives of the police personnel on duty in the field.
Head of Banten Police Public Relations Unit Sr. Comr. Didik Heriyanto explained that the order had been conveyed to all personnel tasked with the 2023 Ketupat Operation.
“Personnel should not hesitate to use their firearms to stop threats that endanger the safety of the community and their own personnel,” Didik said, following the Regional Police’s order on Monday, April 17, 2023.
The use of firearms by police personnel can be justified to protect the safety of others, when defending themselves and others from fatal threats and serious injury, as well as preventing crimes that threaten the lives of people.
"This firm and measured action is a preventive strike for the Banten Police personnel to prevent fatalities and injuries among residents," Didik said.
Didik also said that as long as the order is enforced, Banten Police personnel must not be afraid to shoot at bajing loncat on sight as it is their duty and they are also protected by law, namely Article 50 of the Criminal Code.
