Labor Party Stages Protest Demanding RUU PPRT Ratification

17 April 2023 12:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Labor Party held yet another demonstration in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) today, April 17. Labor Party President Said Iqbal stated that around 500 people would join the protest.

In today's action, the masses will bring three demands to the DPR. “First, we demand the DPR revoke the omnibus law, Law Number 6 of 2023 concerning Job Creation,” Iqbal said in a statement, Monday, April 17.

He explained that there are nine issues brought in the protest, including low wages, outsourcing for life, work contracts without a certain period, low severance pay, easier layoffs, and the removal of the two-month long break.

The workers also demand that the government revoke the parliamentary threshold. According to Iqbal, the regulation harms democracy and perpetuates oligarchy. “Third, we demand that the DPR immediately pass the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (PPRT) into law,” he underlined.

Iqbal said that the discussion on the PPRT Bill in the DPR has been going on for 18 years and has not been ratified to date. Yet the bill is needed to provide legal protection and certainty to domestic workers.

“The Job Creation Law which is rejected by the workers is quickly passed. Who exactly does the DPR represent?” Iqbal questioned.

The workers' demonstration was initially planned to be held on Tuesday, April 18. However, the government changed the scheduled joint leave for Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri from April 21-26 to April 19-25, 2023.
