TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Agency (Disdukcapil) predicted that the number of newcomers in the capital will increase by 20 to 30 percent after the 2023 Eid al-Fitr. The agency’s head Budi Awaluddin said that Eid homecoming or mudik has the potential to increase the number of migrants as a result of Jakartans returning to their hometowns.
"It is estimated that the number of newcomers post-Lebaran will increase by 20 to 30 percent or around 36,000 to 40,000," Budi said in a statement on Friday, April 14, 2023.
The agency recorded that there has been a growing trend in the number of immigrants over the past three years. In detail, there were 113,814 migrants in 2020; 139,740 migrants in 2021; and 151,752 migrants in 2022.
The new city residents come from various educational backgrounds. Those who are senior high school (SMA) graduates amounted to 78.04 percent in 2020, Budi informed. The figure increased to 78.25 percent in 2021 and 78.49 percent in 2022.
According to Budi, the surge in newcomers needs to be anticipated as it has the potential to raise poverty, stunting, unemployment, and crime.
At present, the agency is preparing a data collection strategy. Newcomers will be mandated to comply with the population administration (adminduk) policy and directly report their arrival to nearby neighboring units (RT/RW).
"The Jakarta Provincial Government will encourage orders into the administration to map out potential problems and deal with them immediately," Budi said. "Moreover, Jakarta will become a global city."
In addition, the Jakarta Provincial Government also appealed to newcomers to have certainty of a place to live and a place of work, as well as come with expertise and skills.
