Bank Indonesia Says Counterfeit Bills Number is Lower

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The public's need for cash increases as Eid al-Fitr draws close. Bank Indonesia (BI) stated that the circulation of counterfeit money is far lesser compared to previous years.
"First, concerning counterfeit money, in every country, there is counterfeit money, but how many," said Head of Money Management Department of Bank Indonesia Marlison Hakim on Monday, March 20, 2023.
According to Marlison, the circulation of counterfeit money in Indonesia is small in comparison to the amount of money being circulated. To measure the ratio, Marlison said that Bank Indonesia is comparing how many counterfeit bills are found among 1 million of circulated bills.
"Three years ago, on average, each year there were nine counterfeit bills among 1 million circulated bills," Marlison said.
Meanwhile, last year, Marlison mentioned that there were 5 counterfeit bills among 1 million circulated bills.
"We would like to inform that the percentage of counterfeit bills compared to circulated bills is decreasing," Marlison asserted.
Therefore, Marlison urged the public to exchange their money with Bank Indonesia or other official banking services to prevent the spread of counterfeit bills.
Bank Indonesia is cooperating with national banks in providing roving cash services at 5,066 locations across Indonesian regions. The service will be provided on March 27, 2023.
People can exchange their money for certain bills and can also exchange damaged bills for new ones.
