Nationwide Labor Unions to Long March in Protest of Job Creation Law

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Labor Party along with labor unions and organizations from a number of Indonesian regions are planning to conduct a five-day long march that will see the House of Representatives (DPR) headquarters as their final destination. In an official statement, this movement comes as a protest against the government’s Job Creation omnibus. 

Labor Party leader Said Iqbal announced that the long march will be participated by members from Bandung and Cilegon and gather at Jakarta’s House HQ on March 14. 

“We plan to hold the march from March 10-14. Through several cities, and each city that is passed will be greeted by hundreds to thousands of masses of workers who carry out the long march," Said Iqbal announced in a press statement on March 1. 

The collective labor unions aim to collect 1 million petitions from the working class people and common people that will support the rejection of the Job Creation law. These petitions will then be handed to President Jokowi and House leaders. 

Regions that have announced their participation are Serang, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Medan, Aceh, Bengkulu, Lampung, Pekanbaru, Batam, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Makassar, Morowali, Ambon, Ternate, and several other industrial cities.
