Walhi: Wings Group Top Polluter in Semarang Coast, Followed by Santos, Unilever

22 February 2023 09:41 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) of Central Java revealed its audit results that Wings Group, one of the country's leading fast-moving consumer goods or FMCG companies, is the most polluting company in the province. Coinciding with the National Waste Awareness Day 2023, Walhi held a Brand Audit & Clean Up on the coast of Kampung Tambakrejo, Semarang City, on Tuesday, February 21.

The audit was conducted by collecting garbage in a 300-square-meter area on the edge of the fishers’ village. “There are three groups collecting waste in a 50x2 meter area,” said Walhi Central Java Program Manager, Nur Colis.

Then the collected waste was sorted by its type, brands, and companies producing the waste. It was discovered that Wings Group became the biggest contributor with 310 pieces of packaging waste.

The second and third places were a coffee roasting company PT Santos Jaya Abadi (Kapal Api) with 246 packaging waste and FMCG company PT Unilever Indonesia with 208 packaging waste.

They were followed by PT Ajinomoto Indonesia, PT Frisian Flag Indonesia, Indofood Group, PT Marimas Putra Kencana, PT Karunia Alam Segar, PT Java Prima Abadi, and PT Florisa Nusapersada.

Meanwhile, based on the waste type, single-use plastic waste dominated the findings reaching 1,682 pieces, followed by recycled plastic and rubber with 377 and 109 pieces respectively.

According to Colis, the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 75 of 2019 noted that producers must design a waste reduction road map for their products. “It turns out that many manufacturers still have a lot of homework to reduce their plastic waste,” he said.

The collected and identified waste was then transported to the waste management site. Walhi also conducted similar actions in various places on the island of Java.
