TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi demanded the Jakarta Provincial Government and the Ministry of Public Works and Housing resume the river normalization project on 12 rivers in the capital city which was stopped during the era of Governor Anes Baswedan.
“There are 12 rivers in Jakarta that require normalization,” he said while monitoring the normalization project on Ciliwung River in East Jakarta, Tuesday, February 21, 2023.
He claimed that the normalization project has already begun. However, he asked Jakarta Acting Governor Heru Budi Hartono and PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono to focus on completing the 17-kilometer Ciliwung river normalization project.
The project was targeted to complete in 2024 as he hoped that this effort could significantly reduce Jakarta's flooding.
“Because the water flow from higher grounds (Bogor) is also held back by Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam,” Jokowi said.
Last year, the state head inaugurated Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam in Bogor, West Java. These two dams are one of the measures to ease flooding in the capital city due to water flow from Bogor. “We hope to reduce flooding in Jakarta by approximately 30.6 percent,” said Jokowi on Friday, December 23, 2022.
