More Than 2,300 People Confirmed Dead in Turkey Earthquake

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 2,300 people are confirmed dead following the massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hits the southeastern part of Turkey and Syria on Monday morning, February 6, 2023, as reported by ABC News.
Turkish emergency services said that at least 1,498 people died in the disaster with 810 confirmed deaths in Syria. In total, the disaster took the lives of 2,308 people.
The earthquake, which occurred at dawn in the city of Pazarcik in Kahramanmaras, was followed by several strong aftershocks. Thousands of buildings were destroyed on both sides of the border. The number of victims is predicted to increase as rescue officers continue to find more victims under massive rubbles.

Back in 1939, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 had also occurred in Turkey and killed around 30,000 people. According to the United States Geology Survey, the earthquake that hits Turkeyon Monday morning, February 6, 2023, has the same magnitude as the earthquake back in 1939.
