TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Religious Affairs Ministry’s director of early education and religious boarding schools, Waryono Abdul Ghafur, on Tuesday is hopeful that the death penalty for Herry Wirawan – suspect of 13 rape charges against his own female students – will be a deterrent effect for perpetrators of sexual crimes.
Waryono said he highly respects the decision taken by the Supreme Court (MA) that has officially rejected the court of cassation submitted by Wirawan.
"Hopefully law enforcement against perpetrators of crimes against humanity, including immoral acts in educational institutions, can provide a deterrent effect. Hopefully, the punishment for Herry Wirawan will be a valuable lesson so incidents like this do not happen again,” said Waryono on January 3.
Waryono considered the sentence that had been handed down to the cassation level at the Supreme Court as a result of the firmness of law enforcers.
This case, where a leader and owner of an Islamic boarding school or pesantren, committed heinous crimes against his own underage students took place before the Religious Affairs Ministry issued Regulation no.73/2022 on the prevention and handling of sexual crimes in academic bodies.
