TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Provincial Government of the Riau Islands has issued a warning for tourists not to swim, dive, or snorkel on the beaches of the Riau Islands. This appeal was issued following the incident of several tourists drowning at 4 Trikora Beach, Bintan Regency.
"We ask the public to be careful. For the time being, given that the weather is not friendly at the end of the year, please refrain from swimming, diving, and snorkeling. This is for our common good," Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad said on Tuesday, December 27th.
Ansar said that towards the end of the year the waves tend to be strong and the wind blows very fast, because of the northern season in the waters of the Riau Islands.
Ansar also asked lifeguards to be more observant and alert in watching visitors. "If you see visitors violating the rules, do not hesitate to remind them. The public must also comply with the warning rules," he said.
On Monday, December 26, three tourists drowned at Bintan's 4 Trikora Beach. Two have been rescued while another is still missing.
