TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Traffic Directorate of Metro Jaya Police will restrict permission for bicycles to take routes on Jakarta Arterial road. Cyclists are only allowed to cross the capital city's road until 06:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time). After that hour, cyclists are required to use the bicycle lane that has been provided.
According to the Traffic Director of Metro Jaya Police, Chief Commissioner Latif Usman, at 06:00 WIB especially on Monday, community activity is at an all-time high which could endanger the cyclist taking the arterial road. Thus, the rules that allow cyclists to cross the road until 06:30 WIB are no longer valid.
"Looking at the current situation, the community activity has increased after the pandemic subsided, starting at 06:00 AM, the number of activity has been growing," said Latif, quoted from the NTMC Polri website, Monday, December 12, 2022.
Latif requested cyclists to accept this new rule. He also stated that this regulation was made based on a priority scale, not because he is an anti-cyclist.
"We appreciate that if there are bicycle enthusiasts, they could do it on Saturday. But if it's during the working days (Monday-Friday), we prioritize the people who want to make a living first, we have no intention to discriminate. This is for the safety of all of us, the scale priority must come first," he concluded.
