TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Bike to Work (B2W) cycling community Fahmi Saimima said that the community has discussed the expansion of Jakarta's bike lane with the current acting governor Heru Budi Hartono.
"It was a good meeting and hopefully the commitment is to maintain what already exists and accommodate our safety aspect on public roads," said Fahmi at the City Hall on Friday, November 18, 2022.
Fahmi specifically mentioned that the community hoped to no longer hear rumors that the city’s budget to build more bike lanes will be dropped from Jakarta’s budget plan.
"We no longer want to hear a narrative that a provincial government, especially the capital city, no longer cares about bicycle lanes. Because bike lanes are nothing new for Jakarta. This is part of city governance that encourages active mobility," Fahmi added.
In addition to B2W Indonesia, Heru Budi Hartono also met with representatives from the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) in his office. The topic of discussion also targets expanding and improving sidewalks for pedestrians.
Heru Budi Hartono said that the evaluation of the cyclist community could be studied further. He agreed that bicycle lanes could be used effectively and welcomed further discussion concerning the issues.
"I ask my Bike to Work friends to study it, and I also asked them to map out which other bike lanes are effective and of good quality for bicycle users. FGDs will be held later," Heru said.
