TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. has chosen to visit Indonesia as his first destination for his overseas trip after being sworn to office on June 30, 2022. The son of Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. told President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo that there were many reasons why he chose Indonesia as his first destination.
"One of them is because we are close, not only geographically, but also culturally and ethnically," Marcos Jr. said during a bilateral meeting with Jokowi at the Bogor Palace, West Java, on Monday, September 5, 2022.
During his visit, Marcos Jr. also thanked Jokowi for the warm welcome. Marcos Jr. - who already arrived in Indonesia on Sunday - said that this is also his first time visiting Indonesia. "It feels like home," he said.
He also reminded Jokowi that the public relations between the two countries had existed for so long even before the two countries were formed. "So it was very natural for us Filipinos to come," Marcos Jr. added.
Marcos Jr. also hopes that the cooperation between Indonesia and the Philippines will grow even stronger after this visit and admitted that one of his goals to travel to several countries in the region was in response to the economy in his country which was also weakening due to the pandemic.
Jokowi also expressed the same hope. "I believe that the relationship between the two countries, Indonesia and the Philippines, will be even closer." President Jokowi also conveyed his condolences for the death of the 12th former President of the Philippines last July, namely Fidel Ramos. Fidel died on July 31, 2022.
