TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government is set to expand the capital city’s bicycle lane or bike lanes to a total length of 309.5 kilometers with the latest expansion taking place this year with 195 kilometers of new lanes, says Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo.
“In total there are 114.5 kilometers and this year alone we will add another 195 kilometers,” says Syafrin in Jakarta on August 31, Antaranews reported.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency is set to build special bicycle lanes in 20 locations in Jakarta with a budget of Rp119 billion.
The government believes new lanes will help increase the number of bicycle commuters as the Agency’s data suggest that in 2005 there were only an average of 47 cyclists on a daily basis but that number has spiked to 3,000 cyclists on a daily basis. The latest statistics on August 2022 reveal there are 4,000 cyclists daily.
Some of the city’s government institutions have contributed to growing the number of cyclists, one of which is the Transportation Agency which has instructed employees to commute with bicycles every Friday. The city has provided a number of bicycle rental services across major bus stations and bus stops that are linked to the bike lanes.
