TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Yogyakarta Special Region administration representative on Tuesday asserted that there are sanctions for school organizations that are proven to force female students into wearing hijabs, which comes after alleged reports of a student of a Banguntapan public high school in the region of Bantul.
“In the process that we are conducting, if proof emerges in later days proving that school management conducted a violation, they will surely have to be sanctioned,” said Didik Wardaya, the Yogyakarta Head of Education, Youth, and Sports (Disdikpora) cited from its official website on August 2.
Citing Antaranews, the local education agency reported that they had questioned the school’s principal, counseling guidance (BK) teacher, religion teacher, and homeroom teacher of SMAN 1 Banguntapan Bantul related to allegations of forcing a student to wear a hijab or Islamic headscarf.
Asked about what sanctions would be imposed on school management if found guilty, Wardaya was not able to confirm in advance.
“Sanctions will have to be looked at from Government Regulation No.94/2021 on state employee discipline. From here we can see how severe the violations are if proven,” said Didik.
So far, according to him, the teachers suspected of being involved have given different explanations and further questioning needs to be carried out. Didik said that in accordance with Permendikbud No. 45/2014 it was regulated that there should be no coercion to use certain religious attributes in public schools.
Schools may not make regulations or appeals for students to use certain religious clothing models as school uniforms and also may not prohibit participants from wearing school uniforms with specific religious clothing models based on the wishes of the parents, guardians, and students concerned.
Previously, the Central Java Ombudsman representative who was monitoring PPDB at SMAN 1 Banguntapan, Bantul Regency, on July 19, received information that there was a student who cried for an hour in the school's bathroom and early investigation found that the student felt depressed after she felt forced to wear a hijab in the school environment.
