W. Sumatran BKSDA Releases Rescued Pangolin Back into the Wild

6 June 2022 13:06 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Sumatran Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) on Sunday, June 5 - in commemoration of the World Environment Day - returned a rescued pangolin (manis javanica) to the wild at the Maninjau nature reserve at the Agam Regency.

Head of the West Sumatra BKSDA Ardi Andono on Monday said the protected wildlife was encountered crossing a street on February 22 by  Yosa Mahendra, a local resident of Jorong Bamban in Agam, who along with his friends rescued the animal and contacted the local wildlife agency.

The Patroli Anak Nagari (PAGARI) team then handed the pangolin to the Maninjau conservation resort for further health observations which found it to be a male pangolin that weighed 8 kilograms and is 110 centimeters in length.

The BKSDA Head conveyed his appreciation to the local residents who had participated in the rescue of endangered wildlife and hoped this case will be a good example for others.

Pangolins are notoriously hunted by poachers for both their meat and their skin scales that are traded for questionable health benefits on the illegal market.
