TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Russian Presidential Office on its website confirmed that a telephone conversation between President Vladimir Putin and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, took place on Thursday, April 28. Both leaders reportedly discussed multiple issues including the G20 event where its presidency is held in Indonesia this year.

Kremlin.ru on April 28 in a post titled “Telephone conversation with President of Indonesia Joko Widodo” recalled that “Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo at the initiative of the Indonesian side.”

They reported that the leaders discussed the Russian-Indonesian interaction and various aspects of the G20’s activities in view of Jakarta's presidency in the Group. At President Joko Widodo's request, the website explained, Vladimir Putin outlined Russia's assessment of the situation in Ukraine with regard to the ongoing special military operation.

Without going into details, both Jokowi and Putin agreed to follow-up on their conversation in the future. The call also saw Widodo urging Russia to immediately put an end to the war and give peace negotiations a chance.

The interaction between the two leaders was also confirmed by President Jokowi himself in a Tweet on the following day on Friday, April 29, where the President tweeted:

“Exchanged views over the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin @KremlinRussia_E on the situation in Ukraine as well G20 cooperation.” He added, “Underlined that the war must stop immediately & peace negotiations be given a chance. Indonesia stands ready to contribute towards this goal.”
