Indonesia Aims to Grow Financial Inclusion Through 'Pesantren' Students

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Economic Affairs Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto said school students, university students, and namely Islamic school students (santri) are groups expected to contribute to the country's growing financial inclusion.
With the ever increasing global economy, Indonesia's financial inclusion rate in 2021 reached 83.6 percent, higher than 2020 which was recorded at 81.4 percent.
"How do we encourage students to become entrepreneurs from an early age, so that in the future the students can become strong entrepreneurs," said Airlangga in a written statement, Thursday, April 21.
The government continues to make efforts to achieve the financial inclusion goal of 90 percent by 2024, which is in accordance with the mandate of Presidential Decree No.114/2020 concerning the National Strategy for Financial Inclusion.
Financial inclusion is the availability of access to various financial institutions, products and services according to the needs and abilities of the community in order to improve the community's welfare.
He said Islamic boarding schools have a strategic role in supporting the Islamic economy and finance as currently there are 36,080 Islamic boarding schools and accommodating more than 4.2 million students.
