TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Jakarta Social Service Agency is set to oversee three areas prone to the increase in beggars or people who need social welfare service (PPKS) during Ramadan to maintain order and security.
The agency head Abdul Salam said such social problems often occur during the fasting month and Eid al-Fitr in the capital, especially Central Jakarta. Three popular areas are Kemayoran, Cikini, and Salemba.
“We also monitor other areas,” Abdul said on Thursday, April 7.
He added that the agency cooperates with related parties including 83 members of the Social Support, Observation, and Control (P3S) task force. They will take turns in conducting the 24-hour surveillance.
The authorities will also conduct surveillance at large mosques including the Istiqlal Mosque, Cut Meutia Mosque, Sunda Kelapa Mosque, as well as Karet Bivak Public Cemetery (TPU), Kawi-Kawi TPU, Pasar Baru Barat TPU, and Petamburan TPU.
Abdul further encouraged the public not to hand over alms to beggars, homeless people, or those with social welfare problems on the road but instead channel it through official alms distribution institutions, both run by the government and private parties.
